Child Marriage

Child marriage in India is legally defined as a marriage where the woman is below 18 years of age or the man is below 21 years. Unfortunately, most child marriages involve underage girls, often from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Despite strict laws prohibiting child marriage, the practice remains widespread, especially in rural areas and villages, where traditional beliefs continue to perpetuate this harmful custom.

At Surman, we encountered a heartbreaking case of a five-year-old girl who was on the verge of becoming a victim of child marriage. We took her under our wing and saved her from this traumatic fate. Today, she attends school regularly and aspires to become educated and strong enough to fight against the culture of early marriage in society.
